Are there any Parkell products that can be used for direct pulp capping?

Yes. C&B-METABOND® and Amalgambond® PLUS both have direct pulp capping on their FDA list of indications for use.

What is the purpose of direct pulp capping?

The goal of direct pulp capping is to place a protective shield over the vital, non-carious exposure, thereby promoting continued pulpal health and vitality.

Which is a more effective direct pulp capping material: C&B-MetaBond or Amalgambond?

Since both products are based on the same 4-META chemistry, they are equally effective when used appropriately.

What is the success rate of direct pulp caps done with C&B-MetaBond or Amalgambond?

Pulp caps are most likely to be successful on non-carious pin-point exposures with mild hemorrhage where the pulpal tissue appears healthy.  Attempting a pulp cap in more extreme cases will likely be unsuccessful.

How do I direct pulp cap with Amalgambond?

1.    Apply the Green Dentin Activator to both the exposure and the preparation for 10 seconds.

2.    Rinse the tooth thoroughly.

3.    Lightly dry the prep to eliminate standing water.

4.    Evaluate hemorrhage control at the exposure site.

5.    Mix Amalgambond with the HPA powder (3 drops base, 1 drop catalyst, 1 scoop HPA powder.)

6.    Apply the adhesive to the exposure and the dentin immediately surrounding the exposure and allow it to completely set.

7.    Once set, the pulp cap is complete and you can proceed with placing a permanent or temporary restoration.

How do I direct pulp cap with C&B Metabond?

1.    Apply the Green Dentin activator to both the exposure and the preparation for 10 seconds.

2.    Rinse the tooth thoroughly.

3.    Lightly dry the prep to eliminate standing water.

4.    Evaluate hemorrhage at the exposure site.

5.    In a chilled mixing dish, mix C&B Metabond adding 2 scoops of the radiopaque powder to a mix of 4 drops base/1 drop catalyst.

6.    Apply the adhesive to the exposure and the dentin immediately surrounding the exposure and allow it to completely set for 6 to 8 minutes.

7.    Once set, the pulp cap is complete and you can proceed to placing a permanent or temporary

restoration.

How do I place a bonded amalgam over an Amalgambond or C&B-MetaBond pulp cap?

We recommend only using Amalgambond as your adhesive for placement of a bonded amalgam.

Procedure for placing a bonded amalgam:

1.    If the entire prep was previously treated with the Green Dentin Activator during the pulp capping process, there is no need to repeat this step.

2.    Apply the “AA” (Adhesive Activator) to the entire prep and allow it to sit undisturbed for 30 seconds.

3.    Lightly air dry to eliminate any pooling.

4.    Mix two drops of base and one drop of catalyst and brush the mixture onto all areas of the preparation.  (For restorations where extra retention is needed mix three drops of base, one drop of catalyst, and one scoop of HPA powder.)

5.    Immediately begin condensing the amalgam into the wet Amalgambond.

6.    Wait until the Amalgambond flash is hard before you begin to carve the amalgam.
